Home Safety Check
Keep your home safe with this once-a-year inspection—from attic to basement. Joy of the Lord Cleaning can perform a one-time safety check for many of these tasks and will refer you to trusted, licensed specialists if you need plumbing, electrical or HVAC repairs.
Structural Check
- Inspect all floors, walls, ceilings, and stairways inside and out for cracks, leaks, or water damage.
- Check gutters and clean
- Inspect roof for hail damage
Smoke & CO Detectors
- Replace batteries in all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
- Manufacturers recommend you replace smoke detectors every 10 years; CO detectors every 5 years.
Fire Extinguishers
- Ensure extinguishers are accessible and functional—check pressure, seals, and for any damage.
- Place one in the kitchen, garage, and on every floor, near exits.
- Review the PASS method: Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep.
- Only use on small fires; evacuate if the fire grows.
Emergency Planning
- Review your family’s evacuation plan.
- You should place fire escape ladders in second-story rooms and practice using them.
Stair Safety
- Fix loose steps and handrails.
- Add non-slip treads if uncarpeted.
- Install or check battery-powered step lights.
HVAC Maintenance
- You should replace filters regularly (every 1–3 months).
- Clear debris around the outdoor unit and clean condenser coils.
Misc Inspections
- Inspect the washing machine water hoses for cracks and the dryer vent for lint buildup. You especially need this if you have any wooden floors in your home.
- Look for moisture in the basement and crawl space. Leaks in these spaces could turn into costly repairs.
- Inspect outdoor sprinkler heads for damage. Look for leaking valves, and verify the watering schedule on the control panel meets your needs.
- Clean debris from foundation vents and window wells.
